Personality:
Gemma Ward is first and foremost a soldier and a woman who's seen combat. This makes her a rarity, and has had psychological effects on her, mostly in terms of establishing her identity. She has shoved herself into a male role and wants the respect that that entails which means that she's constantly pushing herself. She's harder on herself then anyone else can be and holds those who have helped her - few though they may be in her mind - on a high pedestal.
WHO IS GEMMA WARD? It's not really a question that the lady herself can answer. She's spent her whole life pretending to be other people without pretense, usually at the behest of someone else. Trained to be the whole solution to any problem has left her with a severe lack of people skills, and hated by almost every single person that she knows.
That's not to say she doesn't feel, her ability to feel is simply stunted due to harsh upbringing and incredibly poor choices on her part. She cared deeply for her parental figure John Garrett, and strove to assist him in his endeavors. He gave her an opportunity in a world that shunned her - at least in her eyes. Her sense of self worth hinges on what others think of her. Her time with Garrett has led her to chose to be recognized by skill as opposed to appearance. Consequently she does not embrace her femininity. Her appearance matters little when compared to her skill. She is overly businesslike, brisk and to the point, but rather then just accept it if she's questioned she'll bowl over what others might say or think.
In another life if she'd been born a man he probably would have looked at her more kindly but her shortcomings, namely being female, have driven her twice as hard to earn his praises and drive her to bring success to his endeavors as well as her own. She is absolutely ruthless, incredibly dangerous, and on a razor's edge when it comes to her sanity. When she's grabbed she's spent time thinking over the things that she's done and has gone through a sort of rough patch trying to escape her reality.
It's best not to really discuss it.
If Natasha Romanoff had no one who really believed in her, it would be Gemma. She has literally lost everything and arrives in the city at a crossroads to try and decide where she will go with the rest of her life now that she's a woman without her mentor. She is driven, absolutely ruthless, and also slightly unstable after at least six months in isolation. Beyond that she was an incredibly highly trained super spy, speaks six languages and has mastered at least five forms of hand to hand combat. Her sense of compartmentalizing has been broken by Garrett's brainwashing.
She sees it as having been given options and making terrible choices. It wouldn't be unreasonable to assume that
Background:
Born the only girl in a wealthy family of boys, Gemma tried to defend her siblings with a mothering instinct against a harsh and overbearing brother who was abusive- both physically and mentally. Spared nothing, she soon shut down and became his unwilling helper, escaping eventually to boarding school. Upon learning that her brother would be alone in the house with their youngest brother, she broke out and attempted to burn the building down. He survived (they both did) and she was sent to juvenile hall where she was recruited - and broken out by John Garrett, a man who claimed to be an agent for a super secret organization called HYDRA who was impressed - vaguely - by a girl from her family that would attempt such an act. He offered her a way out of jail and a life of crime and she took it.
The next five years were some of the best, and worst of her live. Obsessively driven to master everything set in front of her she abandoned any pretense at femininity. She became a top marksman, demonstrated aptitude for languages, and earned Garrett's grudging respect. He began to teach her more and more, looking on her as a surrogate daughter and she swore her unquestioned loyalty to him and his ideals.
In short observing Coulson's team was supposed to be simple. Throw the man off by being a female specialist - something incredibly rare - then discover the truth about his ressurection. What she didn't expect was to make friends, to care, to learn to love and hope for something better. Weaknesses Garrett did not appreciate.
To make a long story short they made a bid for power when HYDRA broke cover and failed abysmally. Ward was arrested after Garrett's decimation at her former teammate's hands and left to rot in a cellblock - until the moment she was grabbed.
- Gemma has completely sacrificed any sense of agency, and will be quick to prove herself which means volunteering for the considerably more difficult tasks.
- She spends at least four hours training every single day. If it's suggested that she master a weapon she will do her best to do so. Ward was deadly with a gun, she is deadly with guns, knives, bostaffs, and short swords.
- She is a little more vocal in her support of HYDRA when in HYDRA agent's presences but not Garret's presence. She wants to give them no cause to doubt her loyalty whatsoever.
- Without a leader, she's unable to function, but she will seek out a leader quickly.
- She engages in regular meditation to divert herself from any sexual urges. She can play sexy but on a personal level she's absolutely terrified of intimacy. That's only recently changed with the arrival of Skye who she wants to support.
- Skye is female. This is why Gemma struggles with her relationship with her. She does love her.
- She's trying to figure out where she's coming from about that. Her feelings are real, but she never told Skye that she accepted them or that they were real, so Skye thinks everything is an act.
- She likes playing board games.
- She likes dogs and cats. She relates more to animals then people, and will refuse to shoot and kill them.
- She likes them but she won't associate with them, because when she refused to shoot Buddy the dog, she was beaten severely. therefore any interaction with an animal will be avoided.
- />Other Notables: Ward has two horizontal marks down her arms from an attempted suicide. She also has a scar on her right cheek from a secondary fight.
Inventory: Hospital issue scrubs, barefoot, glock 9mm. SHIELD issue datapad.
NETWORK SAMPLE:
[The only thing really that keeps her from discarding the glasses is that they said it'd be important. no SHIELD logos, no HYDRA anything.
That didn't really mean anything either.
There were other players however, and when the feed turns on the voice is that of a woman who is managing to sound a lot more confident then she feels.]
If you have me, you know who I am, what I'm capable of, and that I'm not talking.
[You can practically hear the smile in her voice before she repeats it, in German.] And if you're Hydra, I do not comply.
LOG SAMPLE:
She's never wanted Skye so bad in her life.
None of them. Fitz, Simmons, Coulson, even May - no matter how their relationship ended. Hearing them up above was torture, knowing full-well they weren't here was...was...
Something undefinable. Thank god for skill, thank god for Garrett who wouldn't have stood for this, who would have fought like hell, who was an example in the darkness. She's out, free. There's no way she's going back.
But it feels wrong. There's a body in an alleyway that illustrates just how wrong it is and she's got a man's jacket and a man's shirt and pants for her trouble. Everything's too big however.
First things first, make a plan, make a plan right away...
As soon as she finished her drink.
